Search for "1Z0-183" and most of page one is dumps sites and practice-test listings. That is a poor way to prepare for a professional DBA exam, and Oracle's certification rules prohibit braindump material. You can lose the credential for using it. This guide takes the other route. It covers what the exam measures, how to turn each exam area into a lab you can run on a laptop, a six-week plan, and original practice questions with the reasoning explained.
The exam validates Oracle AI Database administration: the 23ai code line that Oracle now ships as Oracle AI Database 26ai. Everything below works on a 26ai database, and every command was checked against 26ai documentation.

Oracle revises exam details from time to time, and the fee varies by country, so confirm both on the exam page before you book. Check the same page for which exams make up the full Professional credential. Do not rely on a forum post for that.
Who this exam is for
The Professional exam assumes you already administer a database day to day. If terms like CDB, PDB, RMAN backup set, AWR snapshot and Release Update are new to you, start with the fundamentals and the Associate-level material first. If you run 19c databases at work and want to show you are ready for 26ai, this exam is a good fit. Most of the syllabus is skills you use, and the new-features area is exactly what employers are asking about in 2026.
What the exam covers, and the lab for each area
Oracle describes the exam as covering multitenant architecture, RMAN backup and recovery, performance management and SQL tuning, deployment, patching and upgrades, and new features such as Lock-Free Reservations, True Cache and Blockchain Tables. The sample questions published by prep providers also touch Oracle Restart, ASH, AWR and ADDM, PDB open states, cross-container queries, PDB point-in-time recovery, Resource Manager, JSON Relational Duality views and PDB relocation. Here is how to practise each area rather than just read about it.
Area 1: Multitenant architecture
Know the difference between CDB$ROOT, PDB$SEED and user PDBs, and between common and local users. Know how PDBs open after a restart, and every way to create a PDB: from the seed, as a hot clone, by unplug and plug, and by relocation. Know what the CONTAINERS() clause does: a common user in the root queries the same table across PDBs, and the result includes a CON_ID column.
-- create, open, and keep it open after a CDB restart
CREATE PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb ADMIN USER pdbadm IDENTIFIED BY "Lab#Pass2026";
ALTER PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb OPEN;
ALTER PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb SAVE STATE;
-- hot clone (local undo makes this possible while hrpdb stays open)
CREATE PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb_test FROM hrpdb;
-- unplug, drop the definition, plug back in
ALTER PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb_test CLOSE IMMEDIATE;
ALTER PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb_test UNPLUG INTO '/tmp/hrpdb_test.xml';
DROP PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb_test KEEP DATAFILES;
CREATE PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb_test USING '/tmp/hrpdb_test.xml' NOCOPY TEMPFILE REUSE;
-- relocate: run in the target CDB, over a database link to the source CDB
CREATE PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb FROM hrpdb@src_cdb_link RELOCATE;
SELECT con_id, name, open_mode, restricted FROM v$pdbs;
Area 2: Backup and recovery with RMAN
Expect questions on backup strategy, and on recovering at different scopes: the whole CDB, one PDB, one tablespace, one table. Know the role of the controlfile autobackup, how RESTORE ... VALIDATE proves a backup is usable without restoring it, and when flashback is faster than a restore. Our table-level point-in-time recovery lab is a good single afternoon on this area.
RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
RMAN> BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG;
RMAN> BACKUP PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb;
RMAN> LIST BACKUP SUMMARY;
RMAN> RESTORE DATABASE VALIDATE;
-- one PDB back to a point in time; the CDB and other PDBs stay open
RMAN> ALTER PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb CLOSE IMMEDIATE;
RMAN> RUN {
SET UNTIL TIME "TO_DATE('2026-10-07 13:58','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI')";
RESTORE PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb;
RECOVER PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb;
}
RMAN> ALTER PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb OPEN RESETLOGS;
-- one table, without touching the rest of the PDB
RMAN> RECOVER TABLE hr.employees OF PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb
UNTIL TIME "SYSDATE - 1/24"
AUXILIARY DESTINATION '/u01/aux'
REMAP TABLE 'HR'.'EMPLOYEES':'EMPLOYEES_OLD';
Area 3: Performance management and SQL tuning
Know what AWR, ASH and ADDM each do and when to use which. Know how to read the top of an AWR report, and how to use the SQL Tuning Advisor and SQL plan baselines. Know how Resource Manager divides CPU between PDBs with shares and utilisation limits. If AWR reports still feel like a wall of numbers, work through our 10-step method for reading an AWR report before anything else in this area.
@?/rdbms/admin/awrrpt.sql -- AWR report for a snapshot range
@?/rdbms/admin/ashrpt.sql -- ASH: what was active, minute by minute
@?/rdbms/admin/addmrpt.sql -- ADDM findings for the same range
-- SQL Tuning Advisor on one statement
DECLARE
t VARCHAR2(64);
BEGIN
t := DBMS_SQLTUNE.CREATE_TUNING_TASK(sql_id => '7h35uxf5uhmm1', task_name => 'tune_q1');
DBMS_SQLTUNE.EXECUTE_TUNING_TASK(task_name => 'tune_q1');
END;
/
SELECT DBMS_SQLTUNE.REPORT_TUNING_TASK('tune_q1') FROM dual;
-- CPU between PDBs: a CDB resource plan
BEGIN
DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER.CREATE_PENDING_AREA;
DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER.CREATE_CDB_PLAN(plan => 'cdb_plan', comment => 'PDB CPU shares');
DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER.CREATE_CDB_PLAN_DIRECTIVE(plan => 'cdb_plan',
pluggable_database => 'hrpdb', shares => 3, utilization_limit => 70);
DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER.VALIDATE_PENDING_AREA;
DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER.SUBMIT_PENDING_AREA;
END;
/
ALTER SYSTEM SET resource_manager_plan = 'cdb_plan';
Area 4: Deploying, patching and upgrading
Know what Oracle Restart gives a single-server database: automatic restart of the database, listener and ASM after a failure. Know how Release Updates are applied with OPatch and datapatch, and why out-of-place patching is preferred. Know how AutoUpgrade's analyze and deploy modes work, including converting a non-CDB into a PDB. Our 19c to 26ai AutoUpgrade lab covers the upgrade path end to end.
# Oracle Restart: register and check
srvctl add database -db orcl -oraclehome $ORACLE_HOME
srvctl start database -db orcl
crsctl stat res -t
# Release Updates
$ORACLE_HOME/OPatch/opatch lspatches
$ORACLE_HOME/OPatch/datapatch -verbose
# AutoUpgrade
java -jar autoupgrade.jar -config orcl.cfg -mode analyze
java -jar autoupgrade.jar -config orcl.cfg -mode deploy
Area 5: New features in Oracle AI Database
This area separates candidates who studied 19c material from those who worked on 26ai. For each feature, know what problem it solves, its main restriction, and one command. Lock-free reservations let concurrent updates add to and subtract from a column without waiting on the row lock; updates must be plus or minus and must name the primary key. True Cache is a diskless, read-only, in-memory cache kept consistent by redo from the primary; it is not a failover target. Blockchain tables are insert-only tables whose rows are chained by hashes, so tampering is detectable.
-- lock-free reservations
CREATE TABLE inventory (
item_id NUMBER PRIMARY KEY,
qty NUMBER RESERVABLE CONSTRAINT qty_not_negative CHECK (qty >= 0)
);
-- blockchain table: no drop until idle 31 days, rows kept at least 31 days
CREATE BLOCKCHAIN TABLE bank_ledger (
txn_id NUMBER,
account VARCHAR2(20),
amount NUMBER
) NO DROP UNTIL 31 DAYS IDLE
NO DELETE UNTIL 31 DAYS AFTER INSERT
HASHING USING "SHA2_512" VERSION "v1";
-- reclaim space online (bigfile; smallfile from 23.7)
EXECUTE dbms_space.shrink_tablespace('APP_DATA', shrink_mode => dbms_space.ts_mode_analyze);
Round out the area with the features that keep coming up in 26ai work: SQL Firewall, schema-level privileges, read-only users, hybrid read-only PDBs, Priority Transactions, AI Vector Search and JSON Relational Duality views. Our 25 Oracle 26ai interview scenarios give one working command for each, and they double as exam revision.
A six-week study plan
This assumes eight to ten hours a week alongside a full-time job. If you already handle backups or tuning at work, spend that week on the areas you touch least.
| Week | Focus | Done when you can… |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Multitenant | create, clone, unplug, plug and relocate a PDB from memory, and explain common vs local users |
| 2 | Backup and recovery | recover a PDB and a single table to a point in time, and prove a backup with RESTORE ... VALIDATE |
| 3 | Performance | find the top SQL in an AWR report, run the SQL Tuning Advisor, and load a plan baseline |
| 4 | Deploy, patch, upgrade | explain Oracle Restart, apply an RU with datapatch, and run AutoUpgrade in analyze mode |
| 5 | New features | run one working command for each new feature and state its main restriction |
| 6 | Revision | score comfortably above 60% on timed practice under exam conditions, then book |
Build a lab you can break
Oracle AI Database 26ai Free is enough for most of this syllabus: multitenant, the new features, and RMAN on the Full container image. RMAN is not included in the Lite image, so use Full. Free is limited to 2 CPUs, 2 GB of RAM and 12 GB of user data, which is plenty for labs. Our guide to installing Oracle 26ai Free on Windows 11 covers both the native installer and Docker. Oracle Restart and other Grid Infrastructure topics need a full Enterprise Edition installation on Linux, so read those from the documentation if you cannot build one.
The habit that matters most is to break things on purpose. Drop a table and recover it. Delete a datafile in the lab and restore it. Close a PDB and find out what the application sees. Exam questions are written around exactly these situations.
Practice questions
These are original questions written for this guide in the style of the exam. They are not taken from the real exam.
Question 1
After every CDB restart, the PDB HRPDB stays in MOUNTED mode and users cannot connect. What is the simplest permanent fix?
- Add
STARTUP PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdbto the listener configuration - Open the PDB, then run
ALTER PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb SAVE STATE - Set the
AUTOSTART_PDBinitialisation parameter to TRUE - Re-create the PDB with the
OPENclause
Answer: B. SAVE STATE records the PDB's current open mode, and the CDB restores it at startup. There is no AUTOSTART_PDB parameter; a startup trigger would work but is not the simplest fix.
Question 2
Which statement about True Cache is correct?
- It can be used as a failover target if the primary is lost
- It keeps a full copy of the primary's datafiles on local disk
- It is kept consistent by redo from the primary and serves read-only queries
- It requires the primary to be a RAC database
Answer: C. True Cache is diskless and read-only. For failover you need a Data Guard standby.
Question 3
The column QTY is defined as RESERVABLE with a check constraint, and ITEM_ID is the primary key. Which update is allowed?
UPDATE inventory SET qty = 10 WHERE item_id = 1;UPDATE inventory SET qty = qty - 1 WHERE item_id = 1;UPDATE inventory SET qty = qty - 1 WHERE qty > 0;UPDATE inventory SET qty = qty * 2 WHERE item_id = 1;
Answer: B. Updates to a reservable column must add or subtract, and must identify the row by its primary key.
Question 4
A user dropped and purged HR.EMPLOYEES in PDB HRPDB an hour ago. Other tables in the PDB have changed since, and those changes must be kept. What do you use?
FLASHBACK TABLE hr.employees TO BEFORE DROP- PDB point-in-time recovery of HRPDB
- RMAN
RECOVER TABLE ... OF PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb FLASHBACK PLUGGABLE DATABASE hrpdb
Answer: C. The table was purged, so the recycle bin cannot help. Recovering the whole PDB would discard the other changes. RMAN table recovery restores just that table through an auxiliary instance.
Question 5
You want PDB HRPDB to get three times the CPU share of other PDBs when the server is busy, but never more than 70% of the CPU. What do you configure?
- A CDB resource plan directive with
shares => 3andutilization_limit => 70 CPU_COUNT = 3in the CDB root- A database service with a higher priority
- A profile with
CPU_PER_SESSIONset for HRPDB users
Answer: A. CDB plan directives control CPU between PDBs: shares set the relative priority, and the utilisation limit sets the ceiling.
Common mistakes
- Studying only from 19c books. The multitenant and RMAN chapters carry over, but the new-features area does not exist there.
- Reading without labs. Many questions describe a situation and ask what happens next. Only hands-on time makes those obvious.
- Using dumps. Besides teaching you wrong answers with confidence, braindump material breaks Oracle's certification rules and can cost you the credential.
- Booking before you are ready. Book when timed practice is consistently above the pass mark, not on the day you finish reading.
FAQ
Is 1Z0-183 for Oracle 23ai or 26ai?
Both, in practice. The exam was introduced for Oracle Database 23ai and is now titled Oracle AI Database Administration Professional. 26ai continues the 23ai code line, so preparing on a 26ai database covers the same features.
How long does it take to prepare for 1Z0-183?
For a DBA who already works with 19c, six weeks at eight to ten hours a week is realistic. Allow longer if multitenant, RMAN or AWR are new to you, because those areas need hands-on practice, not just reading.
Can I pass 1Z0-183 without hands-on experience?
It is much harder. The questions are written around administration situations, and recognising the right answer depends on having seen the behaviour. A free 26ai lab on a laptop closes most of that gap.
What is the difference between 1Z0-182 and 1Z0-183?
1Z0-182 is the Associate-level exam on core administration. 1Z0-183 is the Professional exam, covering multitenant, backup and recovery, performance, patching and upgrades, and new features in more depth. Check Oracle MyLearn for how the two combine into the credential you want.
